GNX
The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century personal luxury coupe, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. Through the early 2000s, the model line served as a divisional counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
For 1976, the Regal became a distinct model line slotted below the Century; after downsizing, the two lines were split entirely for 1982. For 1988, the Regal adopted front-wheel drive with the Grand Prix and Cutlass Supreme and introduced a four-door bodystyle; a second generation was slotted above the Century. After 2004, Buick consolidated its mid-size range, with the Buick LaCrosse replacing both the Regal and the Century. After a seven-year hiatus, the Regal returned to North America for 2011, becoming a rebranded Opel Insignia (the largest car sold by GM Europe). Again a mid-size sedan, the Regal also shared commonality with the second-generation LaCrosse. For 2018, Buick again marketed the Insignia as the Regal, sourcing all production from Germany. Alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon since the withdrawal of both the Century and Roadmaster Estate after 1996.
While not the only vehicle offered with the powertrain, to market its success in NASCAR racing, the Buick Regal featured the turbocharged LD5 3.8L V6 engine from 1978 to 1987; alongside its availability as an option, the turbocharged V6 was showcased in the Regal T-Type, Regal Grand National, and the limited-production Buick GNX (the latter, one of the fastest-accelerating cars of the 1980s). During the mid-1990s, a forced-induction V6 returned, with a supercharger supplanting a turbocharger.
The Regal inaugurated the sale of General Motors vehicles in China, as it introduced the fourth-generation design in 1999. In 2008, SAIC-GM introduced its second-generation Regal, locally producing the Opel Insignia A. Following the 2017 GM sale of Opel to PSA (now Stellantis), Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America after the 2020 model year; SAIC-GM currently produces the Insignia B-derived Regal for China.
